  4. Toronto brings a World Series triumph to the Great White North

  7.     A U.S. visitor to Canada asked a native what item he might
  8. bring home that would represent the Canadian character. The
  9. reply: "An inferiority complex."
  10.  
  11.      Not this week. Canada's team, the Toronto Blue Jays, won
  12. the first true World Series in a six-act thriller with
  13. America's team, the Atlanta Braves, that proved again that
  14. baseball is a game of inches and ifs. Base runners ran backward
  15. (costing Atlanta a crucial big inning); umps went myopic
  16. (depriving the Jays of the first Series triple play in 72
  17. years). The Braves' batters mostly smacked screamers into
  18. grateful Toronto gloves. Atlanta embarrassed no Jays hurler
  19. except Jack Morris, the $10 million mercenary who lost both his
  20. starts.

  22.      Two other first-year Jays, pitcher David Cone and ageless
  23. slugger Dave Winfield, brought Toronto a 11-inning 4-3 victory
  24. in the finale. And while Atlanta's pennant flew at half-staff,
  25. Canada's flag was proudly unfurled right side up. Nice guys
  26. finish first, eh?
